International Open Air Festival, Jazz at the Old Town, which is open to the public and addressed to a wide range of recipients, is a unique event of it’s kind in Poland. It is also one of the most popular and the biggest, considering the number of the public, jazz festivals. It lasts through two summer months and it is among longest festivals both in Poland and in Europe. Concerts take place every saturday in July and August.
According to studies and questionnaires it is for many years an artistic representation of Warsaw. Over the 22 years, the audience of different age amounted to an impressive one million. One edition of the festival gathers about 40 thousand music lovers, jazz fans and tourists from Poland and abroad alike.
The festival creates new facts and artistic values. Original programme, international stars, premiere concerts and jazz discoveries are our signature signs.
Polish audience had a chance to enjoy for the first time such greats of the swing era like: Scott Hamilton, Duffy Jackson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, hear new discoveries of the American music scene like: Alfredo Rodriguez Grace Kelly, Kyle Eastwood (Clint Eastwood’s son), Avishai Cohen, Hiromi.
In last editions we also presented international jazz stars like: Archie Sheep, David Murray, Roy Hargrove, Christian McBride, Joey Calderazzo, Mike Stern, Richard Galliano, Dino Saluzzi, Bill Evans, Lee Konitz, Chico Freeman, Ernie Watts, Jacky Terrasson, Charnett Moffett, Stanley Jordan, Cyrus Chesnut, Buster Williams, Lenny White, Jeff Lorber, Eric Marienthal, Greg Osby, Omar Sosa, Bobo Stenson, Kenny Wheeler, Tord Gustavsen, Yaron Herman, Marilyn Mazur, Danilo Rea, Stefano Bollani, Enrico Pieranunzi, Jorge Pardo, Shai Maestro, Terje Rypdal, Palle Mikkelborg, Birelli Lagrene, Ulf Wakenius.
It is worth mentioning that the festival is present in most important national media, information about the festival was shown by BBC World and TV Deutche Welle, Das Erste made a documentary about the event.
European Jazz Star. An ambassador of the Italian jazz, alt sax virtuoso of an impressive biography. Child prodigy and a great hope of the Italian jazz who started playing at 9 and gave his first concert at 11. At fourteen he joined Wynton Marsalis group in their European tournee. He played with the biggest American jazzmen: Hank Jones, Dave Brubeck, Cedar Walton, Joe Lovano, Christian McBride. A recipient of many prestigious awards, played for president Barack Obama at the White House. Francesco Cafiso delights with his unique creativity, master ful play, created sound and his concerts are simply breathtaking.

John Pizzarelli - maestro of swing, well known American guitarist and vocalist together with Daniel Jobim - great musician, Grammy recipient and a grand son of Antonio Carlos Jobim first time in Poland! John Pizzarelli is a star of the jazz guitart (swing), vocalist, composer and a leader of his own groups. He recorded over 20 acknowledged albums and participated in recording more than 40 albums with Paul McCartney, James Taylor, Buddy DeFranco. Sensation of the evening will be Daniel Jobim – grand son of the legendary bossa nova master Antonio Carlos Jobim. Pianist, vocalist, composer, producer and a Grammy recipient for Latin Jazz Performance. He worked with top artists like: Joao Gilberto, Caetano Veloso, Tom Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Milto Nascimento, Stevie Wonder, Sting.
This American group belongs to the elite of the jazz legends. It is one of the top ensambles playing improvised pieces which combine clasic western jazz with ethnic and hindu sounds. They are four time Grammy nominees and forerunners of the Etno-jazz, which is a formal and stylistic sensation but also proof of their artistic integrity. Current line – up is ; pianist and guitarist Ralph Towner, oboist and sax player Paul McCandless, bass player Paolino Dalla Porta and drummer Mark Walker. Apollo 15 astronauts listened to Oregon on their flight to the Moon and named two of its craters after the group pieces : "Icarus" and "Ghost Beads".
Jazz Top. Great American Jazz. Premiere of the Afro- Caribbean Mixtape! Grammy recipient, one of the world class jazz trumpet players, vocalist, composer and multi instrumentalist. Nicolas Payton , who already has a place in the history of music, is considered to be a member of an elite group of the greatest artists of the century. Wynton Marsalis inspired his interest in modern jazz and improvisation. Nicolas player with him in New Orleans and is still involved with his Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He also played with such legends as : Ray Brown, Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, Joe Henderson, works with great vocalists like Casandra Wilson, Esperanza Spalding, Jane Monheit.
Jazz Top. Great American Jazz. Jazz Times magazine called him “ One of the most exciting sax masters in the modern jazz “ Down Beat many times named him number one in the baritone sax category. Leader of his own groups, composer of many acclaimed albums, cooperates with modern jazz stars. James Carter already in his youth played with Wynton Marsalis (Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra), Lester Bowie (New York Organ Ensemble) and with Aretha Franklin, David Murray, Sonny Rollins, Art Ensemble of Chicago.
Jazz guitarist, master musician, composer, leader and one of the most acclaimed Polish jazzmen. He plays and composes great pieces characterised by unusual , wide sounds and refined harmonies. Tomasz Stańko, Leszek Możdżer, Stanisław Soyka and Anna Maria Jopek participated in his projects. Marek Napiorkowski was named the guitarist of the year in 2012, 2013 and 2014 by the magazine Jazz Forum , was nominatem six times to the Fryderyk award and worked with Urszula Dudziak, Jan „Ptaszyn” Wróblewski, Janusz Muniak, Tomasz Szukalski on many interesting projects.
Special project with acclaimed jazzmen- Roberta Kubiszyn on bass guitar and Czarek Konrad on drums. Grzegorz Turnau is a great pianist, composer, vocalist and lyricist from Cracow, who created his own unique style characterized by precision and elegant execution. Received many prestigious awards like : 9 Fryderyk’s, 2 Wiktor’s, Grand Prix at Festival in Opole, Mateusz award given by Radio Trójka. Worked with Ewa Małas-Godlewska, Anna Maria Jopek, Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz, Zbigniew Preisner, Stanisław Soyka, Justyna Steczkowska, Magda Umer.
Christian Bakanic, the group leader, is an Austrian accordion virtuoso and composer who improves the popular image of the instrument. The group is not a typical accordion trio and crosses many musical frontiers. They combine spontaneity of jazz, passion of the tango, modern club rythyms with manyfaced European folk music. Their creative, passionate artistic endeavours result in a wide acclaim and many followers.
Only one concert in Poland of the two generations of great innovators and flamenco masters. Carmona is an import ant figure in the modern history of the Spanish gitar and flamenco. His son - Pepe Habichuela is a heir of the four generations of musicians from Granada. He was twice nominated to the Latin Grammy and played in “Flamenco, Flamenco” by Carlos Saura. Javier Colina is one of the most outstanding Spanish musicians and a great bass player. Performed with legends like : Dizzy Gillespie, Hank Jones, Gary Bartz, George Benson and the best of flamenco and latin jazz: Tete Montoliu, Chucho Valdez, Jerry Gonzales, Perico Sambeat, Jorge Pardo.
