On the 22nd of June begins the XIX International Open Air Festival -Jazz at the Old Town-. It is an artistic representation of Warsaw, a great tourist attraction as well as one of the most popular jazz festivals in Poland. In 18 years of its existence it gathered an impressive half a million of music lovers. This yearly event is always present in the Polish media, it was mentioned by BBC World and Deutche Welle devoted a programme to the Festival.
The public had an opportunity to hear, for the first time, such greats of the swing era as : Scott Hamilton, Duffy Jackson, Dr. Lonnie Smith and get to know such discoveries of the American stage like: Alfredo Rodriguez, Grace Kelly, Avishai Cohen and Kyle Eastwood (Clint Eastwood's son). Most outstanding Polish musicians: Michał Urbaniak, Tomasz Stańko, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Leszek Możdżer, Włodek Pawlik presented their new or anniversary projects. The greats of the jazz world performed as well, among them: Archie Sheep, David Murray, Richard Galliano, Dino Saluzzi, Bill Evans, Lee Konitz, Avishai Cohen, Chico Freeman, Bobo Stenson, Kenny Wheeler, Tord Gustavsen, Yaron Herman, Caecilie Norby, Marilyn Mazur, Jeff Lorber, Ernie Watts.
Original program - variety of styles, international stars, premiere performances and discoveries are the Festival-s trademarks. The XIX edition will be no different and promises to be a revelation.
June 22nd - Squeezeband
Premiere event - first time in Poland, an only concert by the international ensemble -All Stars- created by music greats from the USA, Holland, Martinique, Italy and Switzerland: Chico Freeman, Jasper van Hof, Michel Alibo, Nino G. Reto Weber. The group combines jazz, rock, world and African music into an original style of its own.
June 29th - Pascal Schumacher Quartet
This exciting vibraphonist, composer and performer is one of the most interesting musicians from Luxemburg. He is a recipient of many prestigious awards (i.e. Echo Jazz, the Export Artist 2012 Award by the Luxembourgish Music Industry. His visionary and melodic sounds are a combination of many types of music with love of improvisation.
July 6th - Kahiba
Premiere."Exciting and very creative European trio- - writes Down Beat. Three outstanding musicians - Austrian sax and flute player Heinrich von Kalnein, accordion player Christian Bakanic and Swiss drummer Gregor Hilbe create enchanting, masterful pieces, unique combination of jazz, Brazilian, Jewish and world music.
July 13th - Jacky Terrasson Trio
Best of the best in jazz ! This, residing in New York, French musician is among the greatest and most popular jazz pianists of the last years. He is the creator and continuator of the Blue Note movement. New York "The Sunday Time" listed him among the thirty most outstanding pianists and music personalities who will have a great influence on the world-s culture. Betty Carter, Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Cassandra Wilson are musical partners of this virtuoso.
July 20th - Hiromi Trio Project
Top hit in the jazz world ! Polish premiere. An only performance in Poland of this young, yet already awarded star of Japanese jazz. A pianist and composer who at 17 recorded with Chick Corea. Her nine albums received awards and she dazzles with her impressive technique, expressive play and amazing ability to combine progressive jazz, rock with classic music. Her concerts electrify both the audiences and the media all over the world . She is accompanied by Anthony Jackson on bass guitar and Simon Phillips on the drums.
July 27th - Adam Bałdych Imaginary Quintet
Many experts named him the hope of the jazz violinists world as well as a virtuoso of the Middle. A violinist, composer and a producer records with the prestigious ACT Music. At 16 he was compared to the Best musicians and acclaimed a child prodigy. Recipient of may prizes and awards, last of which is ECHO Jazz 2013.
August 3rd - Enrico Pieranunzi Trio
Jazz top performer ! Italian piano star, one of the most known and renowned musicians on the international jazz stage. Pianist, composer, recorded of over 70 discs his partners were Chet Baker, Charlie Haden, Marc Johnson. He will play film scores Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota composed for the great movie directors
F. Fellini, M. Antonioni, F.F. Copolla and B.Bertolucci.
August 10th - Jorge Pardo Trio
Special event ! An only concert in Poland by this outstanding Spanish jazz and flamenco musician. This vituoso of the sax and flute performed on the most prestigious stages with Paco De Lucia and Chick Corea. He is one of the creators of the Spanish jazz fusion. Flamenco jazz icon who was recently awarded by the French Jazz Academy as the Best European musician. His concert is under the honorary patronage of the Spanish
Embassy.
August 17th - Bester Quartet
This Polish group from Cracow is a phenomenon on the international scale. They have a unique repertoire combining classic, jazz, avant-garde and chamber music. They give a new interpretation to traditional Jewish folk. The Quartet - Jarosław Bester, Jarosław Tyrała, Oleg Dyyak, Mikołaj Pospieszalski record for Tzadik and cooperate with the greats like: John Zorn, Tomasz Stańko, Zbigniew Preisner, Frank London. |
